Week of Critique! - Reminder!

Sun Jul 13, 2008, 8:45 AM
Hey guys, just a quick reminder as I add some more people to the list that you should be critiquing each other as well as being critiqued if you haven't done so already. I'm finding out how time consuming this is as I try to critique everyone myself, so I understand entirely, but yeah, just keep that in mind.

With that said, the other goal of this week is to encourage people to critique people in general. I did play with the idea of extending the week, but not only would it ruin the rhyming title, but I think it would defeat that purpose. This week is an exercise in giving helpful feedback to others, and you have the knowledge of how good it feels for the person you're giving it to because you should be receiving some yourself. In other words - Keep critiquing people after Thursday when critique week ends! More on this point towards the end of the week when I start to float on my own hot air and inflated head.

Otherwise I hope everyone's enjoying the feedback! I will try to get to even more stuff very soon.

----

Hello folks! The promise of new art draws closer and closer. I swear. There'll be a bucket load coming in soon after I finish the project I'm working on.

For now, I feel like I'd like to 'give back to the community' and generally spread the community feeling among those on my watcher list. What better way than a week to encourage each other to learn and grow as artists? This is an event that I've been planning for a while but for some reason I thought to put it into action tonight :)

Basically, I'm asking for people to come forward and post on this here journal to put a portion of your gallery up for in depth critique, both from me and anyone else who chooses to participate. And when I say 'in depth', I mean in depth and hard hitting. As in, don't pull punches people!

This might sound a bit scary for some of you. My style of critique often asks people to try something they might not have thought of before, and I know this is the case with many other people's critiques. NO ONE is going to tell you that your artwork is rubbish, but no one is a perfect artist and there is always room for improvement. Even if you don't like what you hear, think of it as an opportunity to try something NEW. Doing something different won't hurt and who knows? You might just surprise yourself.

Also, DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF TO RECENT ARTWORKS. Putting oldish artworks that you don't think are relevant to your current skill level up for critique can still help. People can find things that might not be so obvious in your newer artworks, but are still in there. There are a myriad of other reasons why including older artworks can be a good thing, but I won't go into all of them here.

So here are the guidelines, laid out just for you:

1. Make a collection of artworks/literature that you would like to be critiqued. You can add to it any time during the week. Here is mine: [link]

2. Post a link to your collection on this journal

3. Look at links posted by other participants (including the one above from myself) and critique as many pieces as you can. Ensure you read artist comments and Criticism MUST be CONSTRUCTIVE.
    - List all the things you like about the piece (remembering everything has some merit and/or potential). Here is a very basic, basic guide to critique. If you would like to go more in depth, feel free. Please note you should always point out GOOD and BAD things about each piece, and no critique should contain only good or bad comments.
    - List all the things you don't like about the piece (remembering no piece is perfect)
    - Think of some ways the things you don't like could be improved and list them
    - Think of some things that might be added to the piece (but aren't necessarily problems) to improve it
    - List the especially good aspects that the artist/writer should keep up the good work on, or continue to improve.
    - Give an overall thought to sum it up.

4. Read critique you get on your own pieces and respond to it in kind.
You MAY ask questions about aspects of critique for clarification or handy hints.
You MAY clarify reasons why you have done certain things.
You may NOT insult the critiquer
You may NOT all out dismiss their critique. All critique must be considered to have value. If you believe a particular critique (assuming it's from one of the participants and not a random DA member) is of no value to you and is needlessly and wrongly picking at a piece, please note me and I will do my best to absolve the issue if need be.

5. Take on board critique and USE IT in future artworks.

6. If an artist you have critiqued adds a new piece to their critique collection, you may critique it in reference to previous critiques you have made, feel free to congratulate them on improvement and/or give tips to help them improve.

Hopefully my 'new art' will be up sometime during the week so it can go under scrutiny with the rest of my pieces already in my gallery.

Anyhoo... Go Go Go!

I'll participate :) But I'd like a critique of my whole gallery (individual critiques on each piece of course), so do I still make a collection? :?

I'll participate. I'll smash together some art stuff. I'd say 'critique my whole gallery', but that's just a bit much as it's huge and my art has changed so much since that first image...Not much point in critiquing stuff I've improved on, eh?

Yeah....

I will add you anyways!
You sure can have your whole gallery if you wish, without making a collection!

I will add you to the list and post your link when it comes! :)
