Artist's Comments

The first of five colouring experiments on other people's art.

OK, I'll say it. This one was a pain in the butt. But I am soooo pleased with the results. I tried to imitate the work of Alphonse Mucha (sp?), which was the style that the lineart artist, :icondeathlotus: was going for. Namely his piece titled "Job" which was an ad for cigarettes, lol.

So there we go. It was interesting, especially because the hair doesn't have much detail to its shading (it's there, I swear, it's just not very obvious...). I put the light source at where their hands meet, but I'm not sure if it's consistent or not. I'd love to hear opinions.

The background didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it to, but I'm still pretty happy with it for my first time doing something like this.

Wow. This looks loads better than what I attempted with it. :3
I think you definitely succeeded in attempting a Mucha-esque colouring job--the antiqued whites and pinks were perfect choices for the clothing and flowers. And while there isn't terribly much shading in the hair, it's a very art nouveau look--I'm sure anyone who would bother to compare it to older pieces would realize it's a style thing.

All in all, amazing. <3

Wicked indeed! Man I hope it was worth the time, I think I spent like... An hour on the background alone hahaha. Thanks for the compliment :)

For real? I recognised it in your icon on ToT and thought it looked pretty good!

I'm so glad I hit that spot on though o.o

Thanks so much!

This is probably the most subtle shading I've ever seen from you. It's interesting in that respect. It would be really hard to do detailed coloring with that line art.

My favorite aspect of the image is in how you shaded the clothes. Not really sure why, but that gets my attention more than anything else in the image. Well, the line art, but that's Lotus.

That subtle shading was both fun and infuriating, especially coupled with the fact that it was difficult to define where to colour with the lines at times (as you said).

The shading on the clothes was helped a lot by the beautiful textures I used, so just a little plug for them: :iconenchantedgal-stock:. In Mucha's style which I was trying to imitate, the shading on the clothing is meant to be more prominent than anything else, it's meant to look more realistic than the other aspects. So it's good that the clothing caught your attention over the rest of the piece, except of course the beautiful line art <3
